Recently, good news was received from the “2017 UCLG ASPAC EXECUTIVE BUREAU MEETING” held in Fuzhou that the meeting adopted the decision of Yiwu to join The World Organisation of United Cities and Local Governments (referred to as UCLG). As one of the 29 Chinese member cities, Yiwu is the second member city in Zhejiang after Hangzhou, and the first Chinese county-level city to join the organization.
At the meeting, Li Dongfang, member of the standing committee and deputy mayor of Yiwu, made a speech on behalf of Yiwu city. He focused on introducing the characteristics and advantages of Yiwu in international trade, logistics and transportation, entrepreneurial innovation and effective practices of integrating into the "The Belt and Road" construction. He said that he would like to work with member cities to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in various fields and achieve mutual benefit and common development. Yiwu will make full use of the member network and international activity platform of UCLG, expand the strength of the city's external publicity, and promote international friendly cooperation, to serve the local economic and social development and international trade reform process, and accelerate the construction of the new pattern of opening up of the city.
UCLG, founded in 2004 in Paris, France, it is the largest international organization of world cities and local governments, and is closely related to important international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank. The aim is to enhance understanding and promote cooperation through the construction of a global platform for local government exchanges, and to help local governments respond to various challenges. The organization has members in 140 countries, of which more than 1000 member cities, 112 members of the national local government association.
